Paraben free make up

For years many make up brands placed papabens in their products but with many reports on the dangers of these we look to use Paraben free make up when ever possible but we are also aware not everyone know’s the dangers and might not know if this is something they should avoid.

What are Papabens?

Parabens are a type of preservative, first introduced in the 1950s. They’re used to prolong shelf life in many health and beauty products by preventing the growth of mould and bacteria within them.’

When it comes to studying the label of your fave serum, the names to look out for on the labels are butylparaben, methylparaben and propylparaben these are the most commonly found parabens on make up products.

Why are Papabens in Make up?

As mentioned above, these were a preservative that was added to make up to prolong its life. It is a non natural preservative that will ensure make up lasts longer before and after it is opened.

What are the dangers of Papabens?

The paraben controversy began when a 2004 study by Dr Philippa Darbre of the University of Reading found parabens in breast cancer tumours. Although it did not prove that parabens caused the tumours, a potential link between the two seeped into public consciousness and sparked further research.

The main worry has been that chemicals such as parabens can interfere with the body’s hormones, particularly reproductive hormones. The possible health risks include developmental disorders, fertility problems and cancer.

Research has shown that parabens mimic oestrogen, and because oestrogen can increase the growth of breast cancer cells, some scientists are concerned that parabens might do the same.
